Many local health departments require anti-siphon valves on outdoor faucets to keep contaminated water out of the drinking water supply. These valves, which are designed to admit air when the supply pressure drops, come installed on some faucets, especially frost-free ones, and are located behind a plastic nut on the top of the faucet near the handle.

Turn off the water to the faucet and open it before servicing or removing a built-in anti-siphon valve. Before removing a screw-on valve, turn off the faucet, release water from the hose and detach the hose from the valve.

Unscrew the plastic cap covering an anti-siphon valve permanently installed inside a frost-free spigot or other outdoor faucet. This can be done by hand in most cases.
